Student Learning. The project called "Preconception Reproductive Knowledge Promotion" (PREKNOP) provides service-learning opportunities for all senior (64) nursing students. Senior nursing students are trained during their community health postings on how to educate women in three partnering neighborhoods and deliver the PREKNOP intervention. Nursing students and community health workers are conducting baseline surveys, providing PREKNOP education to two groups (control and intervention) of participants in the study, and conducting monthly home visits for the first 6 to 7 months of the study. Students involvement in PREKNOP provides opportunities for active involvement in research and will help to develop students' knowledge on evidence-based practice in the area of maternal and child health nursing.
Student Learning. Faculty-student research collaboration: Sixty-four senior nursing students worked with me and some of my colleagues in spring 2013 during their community-focused nursing practicum. The students delivered an educational intervention to promote women's reproductive knowledge titled "preconception reproductive knowledge promotion (PREKNOP)" in the nursing department partnering neighborhoods. Eleven undergraduate nursing students (both seniors and juniors) also worked with me as research assistants on the PREKNOP project from fall 2012 to summer 2013. Internship supervision: One of the nursing department Alumni (2012 graduate) who is presently in a PhD program at Michigan State University College of Nursing worked with me this summer for her doctoral research practicum. FEN-related activities: The educational intervention provided through PREKNOP is among racially diverse groups, consisting of Hispanics, African American and Caucasian women. The home visits therefore, provided opportunities for intercultural engagement for the nursing students working as research assistants on the project.
Student Learning. Seven students are working on the Preconception Reproductive Knowledge Promotion as research assistants. These students are being introduced to research methodologies (quantitative and qualitative) and are having hands-on experience with research. These students are also being exposed to the writing process for manuscript publications.

Work was reviewed or mentioned in public. The Anna Livia Review--a poetry blog based in Ireland--writes, of the poetry journal I founded in summer 2012, "To say that The Battersea Review is set to become one of the more important poetry magazines is surely an understatement. Take a look at the second edition which has just been published free and online and you'll see immediately that the standard of criticism, poetry and translation included is the highest." Elsewhere in Anna Livia Review's roundup, also concerning the same poetry magazine: "In this publication [viz., vol. 1, no. 2, Winter 2013] the standard of work is consistently high but in reading these poems I was also struck by it's truly international quality. From the mesmerising The Koh-I-Noor by Hindustani poet, classical singer and musician, Anand Thakore, which demands a slower more cosmic pace from Western readers, to the beautiful Russian translations from Philip Nikolayev of Rilke's Russian poems, to the deceptive simplicity of Mexican/Italian poet Mario Murgia, here translated by Ben Mazer. Combined with more familiarly Western work from Charles Bernstein, David C. Ward and Adam Fitzgerald and others, The Battersea Review is fast becoming the meeting place for the best in contemporary world poetry."   Formal Foreword . Foreword for The Q.U.E.S.T. for Vocation by Quincy D. Brown, Xulon Press, 2013
Professional Svcs. Reviewed draft manuscript and wrote book foreward for Quincy D. Brown's book, "The Q.U.E.S.T. for Vocation: A Personal Journey to Discern a Life's Calling". Quincy is the African American Vice President for Spiritual Life and Church Relations of LaGrange College, a UMC campus in Georgia. The book is his own personal vocational story that weaves his African American upbringing, his context, his Christian faith, and his struggles with health into a story about listening to how God speaks through mind, body, soul, and meaningful work.
Development & Service. With Susan Felch, Mwenda Ntarangwi, and Diane Obenchain, we organized and funded a NetVUE regional gathering on "Vocational Exploration in a Multi-Faith World" on September 20-21. At part of that event we encouraged consideration of how we understand other world religious traditions in light of Reformed Christian beliefs. By itself that focus would not necessarily meet FEN criteria. However, part of the discussion and learning wss about how varied faith traditions intersect with diverse ethnic and cultural groups globally. In preparation we read "God's Other Children: Personal Encounters with Faith, Love and Holiness in Sacred India" by Bradley Malkovsky, University of Notre Dame professor of comparative religions. That book was also provided to all conference participants. Of those who registered, in addition to the four Calvin organizers, seven Calvin faculty and staff members participated.
