0 Student Learning. Faculty-student research collaboration: Sixty-four senior nursing students worked with me and some of my colleagues in spring 2013 during their community-focused nursing practicum. The students delivered an educational intervention to promote women's reproductive knowledge titled "preconception reproductive knowledge promotion (PREKNOP)" in the nursing department partnering neighborhoods. Eleven undergraduate nursing students (both seniors and juniors) also worked with me as research assistants on the PREKNOP project from fall 2012 to summer 2013. Internship supervision: One of the nursing department Alumni (2012 graduate) who is presently in a PhD program at Michigan State University College of Nursing worked with me this summer for her doctoral research practicum. FEN-related activities: The educational intervention provided through PREKNOP is among racially diverse groups, consisting of Hispanics, African American and Caucasian women. The home visits therefore, provided opportunities for intercultural engagement for the nursing students working as research assistants on the project.
0 Student Learning. I presented on Nigerian culture to a cross-cultural engagement class at Calvin College on October 16, 2012.
0 Student Learning. Seven students are working on the Preconception Reproductive Knowledge Promotion as research assistants. These students are being introduced to research methodologies (quantitative and qualitative) and are having hands-on experience with research. These students are also being exposed to the writing process for manuscript publications.
0 Student Learning. Supervision of honors students' research: - I worked with all (ten) of the Nursing department honors students, 6 senior and 4 junior nursing students, this fall (2012). I met with the 4 junior nursing students in September 2012 to design a 4-semester research/project plan for their nursing major. This involved a brainstorming session in which I interacted with the students to identify their areas of interest and guide them into narrowing their topics or research questions into a feasible project that could be achieved within their four semesters in the nursing program. I worked with the senior honors nursing students to review their existing research and plan the next phase of their studies. I assigned these students to work with nursing faculty members based on their areas of interest and the nursing faculty specialty/research areas. I coordinated the students’ departmental seminar presentations; two junior and two senior honors students presented their projects during this seminar session.
0 Student Learning. Supervision of honors students' research: - I worked with nine of the Nursing department honors students, 6 senior and 3 junior nursing students, this spring (2013). I met with all the students to review their existing researches and plan the next phase of their research for spring semester. I assigned these students to work with nursing faculty members based on their areas of interest and the nursing faculty specialty/research areas. - I worked with two (one junior and one senior) honors students to submit an abstract to the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) and these two students presented their work at the 2013 MNRS conference (March 8, 2013). - I worked with five of the honors students (3 juniors and 2 seniors) to submit an abstract each based on their honors work for presentation at the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI), Kappa Epsilon-at-Large chapter Poster session planned for April 2nd. The five abstracts were accepted for the poster presentation.
0 Student Learning. The project called "Preconception Reproductive Knowledge Promotion" (PREKNOP) provides service-learning opportunities for all senior (64) nursing students. Senior nursing students are trained during their community health postings on how to educate women in three partnering neighborhoods and deliver the PREKNOP intervention. Nursing students and community health workers are conducting baseline surveys, providing PREKNOP education to two groups (control and intervention) of participants in the study, and conducting monthly home visits for the first 6 to 7 months of the study. Students involvement in PREKNOP provides opportunities for active involvement in research and will help to develop students' knowledge on evidence-based practice in the area of maternal and child health nursing.

0 Student Learning. Faculty-student research collaboration: I worked with two students on two projects namely: Parents' emotional reactions to the birth of very preterm babies- Anna Schipper, who is a junior nursing honors student. We had a poster presentation on this project at the 2010 MNRS Annual Research Conference, Kansas City, Missouri, April 8-11, 2010. The second project is a systematic review on "Excess Prepregnancy Weight and its impact on Birth Outcomes among Adolescent Mothers" by Lindsay Clutter, a senior nursing honors student. We are working on manuscripts for publications based on these two projects. Community-based research and learning: Based on the focus group discussions on pregnancy recognition that I did with one of my colleagues, we designed an intervention on knowing your body. This intervention was pilot tested in the neighborhoods that we use for our community-based nursing in spring 2010. The intervention and pilot survey was administered by all the senior nursing students. This provided a great learning opportunities for all the students. Engagement, outside of class, with first-year students:I had one-to-one discussions with all my advisees who were freshmen. FEN-related activities:To promote FEN-related goals, I incorporated discussions of culturally relevant issues and care during pregnancy and childbirth to every class. Students were asked to choose a particular culture and identify main pregnancy-related issues in that culture and present this in every class.
0 Development & Service. Reading groups: I served as one of the experts on a panel to review a book read by Calvin students in spring 2010- "Half the sky."   0 Professional Svcs. Consulted for Heat Transfer International (Kentwood, MI) for chemical analysis of waste-stream from energy reclamation of municipal waste.
0 Professional Svcs. Consulted with Heat Transfer International (HTI; Kentwood, MI) to bring up analytical services laboratory. HTI is focused on converting refuse into electrical and chemical energy from combustion. One of their main goals is leaving the by-products of this process to have a lower level of contaminants than the initial feedstocks. An analysis laboratory for cations in solids and untrapped gases evolved in these processes are essential in this assessment. I have met with a team from HTI to bring their analysis standard operating procedures up to compliance and diagnosed problems.
0 Professional Svcs. From September 2011 to August 2012 I have reviewed over twenty manuscripts seeking publication in chemistry and biochemistry journals from the American Chemical Society and Royal Society of Chemistry/.
0 Professional Svcs. Served as a consultant for Heat Transfer International (Kentwood, MI) to set up an analytical chemistry laboratory. Activity was paused in August 2012 due to time committments.
0 Curriculum. David Dornbos and myself have officially linked Chem 103/105 Honors section with Biol 123 Honors section to assess Chemical and Biological health of Calvin's ponds. This extends biological data to the 15 years of chemical data collected on Calvin's ponds. Fall 2012 is the first linked Honors section where over 25 students are enrolled in both sections and will be doing both chemical and biological analysis.
